FTS

The first trimester scan is fast becoming a cornerstone in obstetrical care as it provides early reassurance against major structural abnormalities (with the limitations of fetal size and development) as well as chromosomal defects. This scan is carried out at 11w6d to 13w6d at which time 75% of major abnormalities can be seen. In addition, > 80% of chromosomal abnormalities, such as Down's syndrome (trisomy 21), may be suspected. The patient gets an immediate calculation of her risk of having a baby with a genetic abnormality and depending on the results, further counseling as to what needs to be done is carried out. Attached is a sample report.
